English Royal Navy Midshipman's Hanger Sword With Lion's Mask Pommel By J. & R. Mole Circa 1835

Stock No:008104

A fine English Royal Navy Hanger circa 1835.  The 18" curved blade with 3/4 fuller is bright with only minor tarnish/frosting and no chips or cracks.  Maker marked Mole on the spine for J. & R. Mole, the well known and highly respected sword cutler from Birmingham, England.  The blade is tight with the hilt.

The brass hilt has a Lion's face on the pommel and a cross guard with inversed disk quillons.  The ridged bone handle has a pleasant honey patina with no chips.  One of the domed languets has double broad arrow markings.

The original brass mounted leather scabbard with dual hangers is completely intact and sound with matching broad arrow markings on the teardrop stud.

Overall length in scabbard is 23 3/4".

A superior and complete example of this desirable Naval Hanger from the Age of Fighting Sail.  A nearly identical example can be seen in the National Maritime Museum's book "Swords for Sea Service", Plate 6, Sword No. 327.
