A Handsome Classic Silver Gilt Mounted Ottoman Kilij Circa 1840 The Engraved Silver Crossguard Struck At Its Apex With Tughra On Both Sides The Characteristic Kilij Blade Of Fine Damascus And Yeoman With Four Relief Panels Filled With Gold Calligraphy.
The deeply curved blade is 24 and 1/2 inches long and 1 and 5/8th inches wide at forte. The gilt Damascened calligraphic panels retain nearly all of their beautiful gold and the Damascus pattern is clearly visible throughout. The gilt silver cross guard it finely engraved and stuck with tughra. Silver gilt hilt with line engraving.
The bulbous blonde horn grip panels are in fine condition except for minor horn worm loss to right panel near the gross guard. Original black Morocco leather covered wood scabbard with minor losses to left side near the elaborately engraved large silver gilt chape. The large silver gilt locket engraved ensuite with leafy meander within Ottoman style panel. The silver gilt chape and locket with expected minor dents but fine condition overall.
The kilij fits perfectly in its scabbard. This is a far better than commonly offered, entirely original Ottoman sword and a most handsome example. 32 inches overall in scabbard. Do not pass this one up!
