A Very Rare Dutch East India Company (VOC) Military Brass Hilted Hanger Or Cutlass Dated 1785.
24 inch blade with narrow fuller. 1 and 1/4 inches wide at forte. Blade is heavily patinated from use at sea likely in Indonesia. Uncleaned, unpolished brass hilt with swelled cast brass grip simulating wire wrap and oversized thumb ring.
30 inches overall. This scarce and desirable cutlass was carried aboard a VOC ship that likely faced fierce seagoing pirates and various uprisings including the Java War (1825-1830) led by Prince Diponegoro
