A Rare And Most Attractive Indian Bujh Or Kuttai Also Referred To As An “Elephant Knife Or Axe” Circa 1870.
7 and 7/8ths inch long blade is 2 inches wide at forte. The blade is finely Damascened with silver scrolling foliage. The engraved copper haft terminates in the characteristic elephant head well cast and chased surmounted by a diminutive brass lion. 16 and 3/4 inch copper shaft entirely engraved throughout its length with designs of scales and leafy meander.
The fluted butt unscrews to reveal a concealed 7 and 1/2 inch dagger blade. This desirable weapon retains its original velvet covered wood sheath (velvet worn) and beautiful repousse copper chape and locket cast and chased with scrolls.
Named after the city of Buhj in Gujarat province this distinctive ‘elephant knife’ or axe is a must have for any aficionado of Indian weapons. 25 inches overall in scabbard and in good overall condition.
