A Fine And Rare Silver And Coral Mounted And Inlaid Algerian Migulet Lock Long Musket Circa 1800.
51 and 1/2 inch long octagonal smoothbore barrel. Approximately 75 caliber. The barrel with smooth age brown patina. Six finely cast and chased silver capucines retain the barrel amid silver rosettes inlaid in the stock (one missing from right side). The large classic Algerian migulet lock mechanism is entirely overlaid with relief cast and chased silver of unusually fine quality, The large frizzen is silver inlaid, The breech tang is overlaid with silver. The lock is retained by three side nails within inlaid bone fleuretts.
The figured walnut three quarter stock is inlaid throughout with silver heightened with more than twenty corals. Bone buttplate. A most impressive 66 and 1/2 inches overall. Lock mechanism not tested as the mainsprings on Algerian guns are incredibly stiff.
This is a true work of art Algerian musket similar to those given to President Thomas Jefferson by the Bey of Algiers now in the Smithsonian Institution.
