A Scarce And Most Desirable Model Of 1859 United States Marine Corps Officer’s Sword In Use Throughout The Civil War And Through 1874.
The 26 inch blade virtually identical to the 1850 Foot Officer’s sword. This Marine Corps blade etched with scrolling foliage and large “USMC”. King’s head stamp at ricasso and “W. Horstman And Sons Phila” in a cartouche. Blade stained but USMC is clear.
Hilt is virtually identical to the 1850 Foot Officer’s. Leather wrapped wood grip is fine as is the wire binding. Original leather scabbard is in good condition with Marine frog stud and drag with minor door or shipboard dents.
The marines were very upset at the order replacing their distinctive and beloved Mameluke pattern swords which accounts for the scarcity of this model. Sword slides nicely into its scabbard and a most attractive example overall.
