A Good And Scarce Late 17th Century Continental Flintlock Holster Pistol Circa 1680.
11 and 1/2 inch round barrel with wide central rib. 54 caliber smoothbore. The barrel of fine quality with raised sculpted reserve at breech. The early ‘banana’ shaped lock with swan neck cock and well sculpted frizzen. The lock and barrel unmarked as is frequently the case with fine 17th flintlock pistols.
Beautifully executed serpentine sideplate derived from the justly famed 17th century French pattern books. Fine triggerguard with fleur de lis finial. Two sculpted steel ramrod pipes. Elegant spurred steel buttcap with ‘skull’ crusher pommel.
Finely relief carved highly figured almost root wood full stock in fine original condition. Old oak ramrod. This fine early European flintlock pistol is in untouched condition with a most attractive “chocolate” patina on the steel parts.
The action is slightly sticky but the mainspring is strong. The bore is good for the pistol’s age. 18 inches overall.
Early pistols such as this one have usually been cut down as gunpowder improved in power and quality. This one is original in length and retains all original small lock parts. A most attractive example.
