A Fine And Scarce English Double Barrel Flintlock Carriage Pistol By The Renowned John Probin, Maker To The Prince of Wales (1769 until his death in 1800).
10 and 1/4 inch plain round barrels with silver fore-sight and London gunmakers proofs. 50 caliber. Finely engraved barrel tang. Signed, bolted stepped plain locks signed “J. Probin”. Rainproof pans, bridled frizzens, all of the best late 18th century London gunmaker’s quality, famed throughout Europe.
Large bow shape steel triggerguard finely engraved with a trophy of arms and large pineapple finial, Steel buttcap engraved with a sunburst. Large steel fore-end cap and steel ramrod pipe. Figured walnut half stock is austere in keeping with a pistol made for use in defending one’s carriage. Bores are good and actions are both excellent on both full and half cock.
16 inches overall with bone tipped ramrod. Good condition overall. English carriage pistols are scarce and one by one of London’s most eminent makers makes this example a collector’s prize.
