A Very Fine And Rare Mid 19th Century British Lion Head Hilt Naval Officer’s Sword With Spectacular Blue And Gilt Blade Circa 1850.

31 inch pipe back blade etched, blued and gilded for 2/3rds of its length featuring a gold fouled anchor on both sides. The right side with a gold flagship sails and the left with a trophy of arms below swags and a cornucopia. Two trophies of arms in gold at the apex of the bright niter blue panel.

This is the finest blade we have seen on an 1850’s British naval officer’s sword. Condition of the etching, bluing, and gilding is excellent. The plain, unprotected section of the blade is lightly stained with a few spots of minor corrosion expected from use aboard ship as moisture collects in the bottom of scabbards.

The hilt with classic fouled anchor and crown retains much original bright fire gilding. The lion pommel is finely detailed and gilded. Triple strand copper wire binds the fish skin grip which is excellent. Original black leather scabbard with brass locket and chape showing dents from shipboard use. The scabbard with some original black finish, slightly tender toward chape but generally good.

A true find for the collector of British officer’s swords or the nautical aficionado.
