A Historically Significant Brass Hilt British Military Hanger Revolutionary War Period The Hilt Elegantly marked “1 47” Possibly For The 47th (Lancashire) Regiment Of Foot and "M. CUMBERLAND" for the Cumberland Militia.

24 and 3/4 inch hanger blade with long fuller. 1 and 1/2 inches wide at forte. Each side deeply engraved with a highly stylized ‘running wolf’ with the initials “SH”, the mark of the well known Birmingham sword maker Samuel Harvey.  Harvey was one of the foremost swordsmiths of the Georgian era and was active from around 1750 - 1800, with some believing this wolf to be one of his earlier markings.  The blade patinated with nicks and a chip doubtless from use in combat and a folding fault. The brass hilt exhibits a lovely untouched patina with areas of original bright polish.

This hanger has never been dismounted and is “as found”, having lost its quillon (common for this pattern). The 47th was present at Bunker Hill, Concord, and other legendary engagements.  The 47th was known as a highly trained and effective fighting unit.  The sword was also issued to the Cumberland Militia.  The Militia was formed in 1760.

One of the most interesting Revolutionary War period swords we have ever offered. 30 and 3/4 inches long overall.
