A Historically Significant Brass Hilt British Military Hanger Revolutionary War Period The Hilt Elegantly Stamped "M. CUMBERLAND” And “1 47” For The 47th (Lancashire) Regiment Of Foot.

24 and 3/4 inch hanger blade with long fuller. 1 and 1/2 inches wide at forte. Each side deeply engraved with a highly stylized ‘running wolf’ with initials “SH”. The blade patinated with nicks and a chip doubtless from use in combat and a folding fault. The brass hilt stamped with the soldier’s name and regiment exhibits a lovely untouched patina with areas of original bright polish.

This hanger has never been dismounted and is “as found”. The 47th was present at Bunker Hill, Concord, and other legendary engagements. The 47th was founded by the Duke of Cumberland known as “Butcher Cumberland” who defeated the Scots at Culloden. The 47th was known as a highly trained and effective fighting unit.

Though the Duke had no sons the fact that this hanger is period stamped “M CUMBERLAND” is most intriguing to say the least. One of the most interesting Revolutionary War period swords we have ever offered. 30 and 3/4 inches long overall.
