A Very Fine Qajar Sipar (shield) Depicting The Sun In Splendor With Gold Damascened Rays The Rim With Silver Decorated Panels Of Calligraphy Circa 1840.

18 inches in diameter. Shield with its four bosses with gold Damascening. Seventeen gold Damascened rays each 4 and 1/2 inches long radiate from the gold Damascened sun in a truly splendid and artistic pattern. The deeply chiselled decorative foliate panels within the gold sun’s rays are enhanced by seventeen gold Damascened florals. The panels of calligraphy are Damascened with silver (the silver is worn as is the case with nearly all Qajar sipars). A decorative brass band completes the artistic effect of this beautiful shield.

The condition overall is fine and the shield even retains its thick red cloth liner with finely embroidered border. One of the most attractive Qajar shields we have seen and one of the best examples in our extensive collection. We were seriously considering taking this one home and hanging it but we wanted to give our clients an opportunity to acquire a great one.
