The Fine High Grade Civil War Officer’s Presentation Sword With Silver Grip And Excellent Shagreen Scabbard Of Captain Lewis L. Fosdick Dated February 25th 1864.

32 inch blade by Clauberg finely etched for half its length with large “US”, trophies of arms and strapwork. The blade and etching in fine condition with age staining but free of pitting and chips. The half basked guard pierced and cast with large American eagle, an eagle’s head in the round as a single quillion. The pommel cast with an eagle in relief. The uncleaned brass retaining good amounts of original fire gilding.

Silver Civil War presentation style grip bound with twisted copper wire in untouched as found condition. Lovely shagreen scabbard with beautifully engraved chape. Locket and suspension mount all with good amounts of fire gilding. One minor dent in chape. The scabbard in very fine condition throughout.

The full presentation inscription engraved by a master jeweler in elaborate and elegant script reads: “Presented to CAPT LEWIS L. FOSDICK 1st Company D 89th REGIMENT N.Y.S.N.G. as a token of their regard and esteem JAMAICA L.I. February 25 1864”. This is a beautiful and most attractive Civil War presentation sword. Research into Captain Lewis Fosdick may well enhance the value of his fine blade.
